Peace! My name is Louis Mayes. I am from Memphis, Tennessee. Like so many, I had a really tough childhood. At age nine, I joined a gang, and by age sixteen, I made it to the very top of that gang. When I was seventeen, I was arrested for first-degree murder. Two witnesses testified at my trial they didn’t see the actual shooting and they only heard the shots. At age twenty, I was convicted of that charge and sentenced to a life sentence.
I came to prison and tried to make the best of it. I am no longer a gang member. I am a moderate Sunni Muslim. November 18, 2022, the Tennessee Supreme Court struck down Tennessee’s juvenile life sentence. If I stay away from ignorance and stay out of trouble, I can go up for parole in under ten years.
God willing, I’ll do it. If you’d like to get to know me, just shoot me a line or two, and I’ll respond. Until then, be safe and take care of yourself. Peace!
